ISB member Zhou Feng reports that the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, China held its 8th “Zhong Yin” Cup Double Bass Competition, October 27 to November 1, 2016. There were 48 participants from all over the country competed in two groups, ages 19 to 30 and age 18 and younger. The director of the double bass teaching and research group at the Central Conservatory, Professor Ziping Chen, was the host of the competition. The jury included Margaret Urquhart (chair, The Netherlands), James VanDemark (U.S.), Petru Iuga (Germany/Romania), Bayan Menghe, Zhou Feng, Yueye Wu (junior group). Winners of the junior group were: 1st prize, Xuanchi Li; 2nd prize, Yihan Wu & Ziqi Li; and 3rd Langkuan Luo & Jiajun Liu. The winners of the senior group were: 1st prize, Zeyu Wang; (2nd prize, vacancy); and 3rd prize, Xinyu Wang & Chi Zhang.
Prof. Ziping Chen, Edmond Cheng (Hong Kong) and young performers presented the opening concert with new double bass works written by Chinese composers. James VanDemark, Margaret Urquhart and Petru Iuga held three recitals and masterclasses. Margaret Urquhart gave a lecture on the early double bass (violone).
