During ISB 2015, our YBers were busy with large ensemble rehearsals, small ensembles rehearsals and a lot of workshops and masterclasses led by our convention presenters.  They also attended convention concerts and visited the exhibits.  It was like a camp on steroids!  On Saturday, June 6, they took Griffin Stage and tore it up!

Myers Brothers

Myers Brothers

The concert opened with a fabulous rendition of Frank Proto’s Carmen Fantasy by our Age 15-18 Division competition winner Aleck Belcher.  Returning for their 3rd convention, the four Myers Brothers played a silky smooth arrangement of the Largo from Dvorak’s New World Symphony arranged by Miloslav Gajdos.

Eight chamber ensemble groups performed, followed by a large bass ensemble performance of works by Edvard Grieg, Duke Ellington and Inez Wyrick. The concert was closed with Donovan Stokes’ Gothic Bass.

Delaney Spielman bass winner

Delaney is one happy bassist!

In addition to the great music, there were two wonderful surprises during the concert.

Barrie Kolstein of Kolstein Music honored young bassist Delaney  Spielman’s hard work and commitment to her musical studies by giving her a new bass of her very own. The gift from Barrie, who was onstage for the presentation, was donated in memory of his father Sam Kolstein, who encouraged and supported many talented young musicians throughout his life. We can’t wait to hear the great music she will be making in the future!

We also celebrated a new award for the young bassist who displayed the most versatility in his or her musical skills, and the first recipient was Rachel Kost. Longtime ISB member Buell Neidlinger created the Alvin Brehm Prize to honor the late performer, composer, educator and mentor to many.

ISB Past-President Kristin Korb was also awarded our 2015 Young Bass Ambassador Award at the concert!

Big bass hugs and gratitude go out to Donovan Stokes for running the program this year.  We also thank and congratulate his team on a job well done!
