The 2017 Young Bassists program at the ISB convention will be an incredible opportunity to make music, meet your new bass friends, and take your own playing to the next level!
Each day we will start with a group class led by a different teacher, focusing on one element of playing, and geared to give everyone an idea to “play” with. We move to our large bass ensemble to rehearse music written just for us, and to play arrangements of jazz and classical works for bass orchestra. Ever heard 100 basses playing together – absolutely sublime! Parts will be available at all experience levels, and will be ready for download prior to the convention. Each day will have masterclasses with international artists and teachers who may be new to you, and who are inspiring, energetic and supportive. There will be technique classes, performance classes, panel discussions on careers and colleges. The teachers, classes, and ensembles are designed for student at all levels, and we want to encourage all students to play in as many situations as they are comfortable.
We break from 12-2pm each day for lunch, opportunity to visit the bass makers, bow makers, string and music vendors, stop in to visit the Build a Bass workshop, and to squeeze in time for your own practice. Afternoons continue with workshops, classes, and rehearsals until 4pm.
Late afternoon and evenings are spent hearing the amazing artists in recital, catching dinner with other YB students, then making plans to hang out/play games in the dorms before calling it a day.
This year we have a special opportunity for the YB students: We will be honoring Dr. Lucas Drew and his long career teaching young bassists. We are preparing a concert of music from Lucas Drew’s catalog, and will be playing his music FOR HIM on Friday. Players who want to participate in this recital will have the opportunity to prepare a piece from a list of Dr. Drew’s works and sign up in advance of the convention start. The music will range from beginner through advanced level, so all student are encouraged to consider participating. Dr. Drew has had an impressive career teaching at the University of Miami and playing in the Florida Philharmonic Orchestra, and was presented with the Distinguished Achievement Award from the ISB in 2015. His interest in advancing bass playing through music of the great composers has led him to develop a vast catalog of works under the St. Francis imprint. This is our opportunity to give back to a teacher who has done so much to nurture young players throughout his career.
Our last day will have a College Fair in the morning where you can meet the teachers from so many great schools of music, and pick their brains about degree programs, careers and more. We wrap our whirlwind week of all-things-bass with a concert featuring the Young Bassists at 1pm. We will show off the work we’ve done in chamber groups, then perform as the most magnificent bass orchestra ever!
